Greetings from New Orleans!
Our group left bright and early this morning from Springfield without a hitch! We had a great ride down with a couple stops along the way. We enjoyed getting to know each other and taking in the scenery. Got to New Orleans around 7 pm and had a fabulous spaghetti dinner waiting for us at Camp Restore!
Our reflection this evening focused on the history of New Orleans. We discussed the numerous times the city has had to rebuild after natural disasters and more about the city's racial history. We then talked group expectations and had a few of our participants volunteer to share their thoughts:
"I am very excited
to participate in Missouri State University's New Orleans's trip. Even just
driving into the city today gave me new perspective and insight. During the
debriefing tonight in our group, we discussed the history of New Orleans and the
impact of Hurricane Katrina. I feel very fortunate to be able to serve for a
new community here and learn about their culture." -Kayla Diehl
"I am really
looking forward to volunteering and getting involved in New Orleans this week.
I am excited to see the city and experience the culture, while giving back and
making a positive impact. I do not know too much about New Orleans, and want to
learn more about the city to really understand what they went through during
Hurricane Katrina, as well as past history. On the drive into the city, there
was still some visible damage, but the most surprising thing to see was the
bridges and the fact that they are all elevated in water and the city is
completely surrounded by water. I also
am excited to see the historical architecture and buildings in the city. I can’t
wait to experience New Orleans this week.” -Kenny Rowey
Here are some photos of our group reflection:
Tomorrow we will be headed to the Whitney Plantation and our reflection will focus on the role of race in New Orleans' History. Can't wait for another great day!
