Final Trip Meeting!

Hey everyone!

We just wrapped up our final trip meeting tonight and I can already tell this is going to be an amazing group of students!  This group is excited and ready to go!

One of the key topics we discussed tonight was what we already knew about Hurricane Katrina and its impact on New Orleans.  We quizzed our group with the following questions.  (Answer for yourself and then see how well you did!)

Questions
1. What year did Katrina happen?
2. How much damage did Katrina cost?
3. How much more is that than the next hurricane? (Hint: the next closest hurricane was Sandy)
4. How many levees broke?
5. Which country made the largest financial pledge to help with a donation of $500 million?
6. How many people died as a result of Hurricane Katrina?
7. How many people were sheltered in the Louisiana Superdome?
8. What 2 movies has the Whitney Plantation been featured in?
9. What's the name of the place we are staying?
Bonus!: What does the 'L' in Samuel L. Jackson stand for?

Answers:
1. 2005
2. $108 billion
3. $43 billion
4. 53
5. Kuwait
6. 1,833
7. 26,000
8. Django  Unchained and Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter
9. Camp Restore
Bonus: Leroy

How'd you do?  Not so great?  If you were like many of our participants, you got one or two right (our highest score was 4).  I think this activity really helped our group realize that even though we've heard a lot about Hurricane Katrina over the years, we didn't know near as much as we thought.  We are excited to learn more about this topic and can't wait to get a tour of the lower ninth ward on Wednesday and then the Hurricane Katrina Museum on Thursday!

We're now just 2 days away from spring break and 4 days away from our departure.  Our group is definitely ready to rock and get immersed into the topic of urban renewal and oppression.

Get ready New Orleans!  The Bears are marching in!
